Infancy is the most important period during which the correct posture and musculoskeletal system is formed. Infancy is characterized by an intense growth rate and significant body mass increase. Therefore, it is very important to provide the child with a mattress that will eliminate the risk of posture defects from appearing.
Children need the right mattress to rest properly as well as to stay healthy. It must be such a mattress, that will not be too soft, but which will ensure bouncy and solid support for soft and fast-growing bones and which will reduce the risk of breathing problems which may occur. The right mattress should allow the child to change positions freely (raising of the head, using the mattress as a support and when turning).
We must also remember, that most children begin standing upright when they are around 6-8 months old, and that is when they take the first steps in their cots.
If the edges of the mattress are too soft and unstable, this will inhibit those actions. As a result, it may discourage the child from further attempts. Thus, it will delay the natural development of the child.
What kind of mattress cover should I choose?
According to the latest international guidelines and standards of treatment and prevention measures concerning allergies, it is recommended to take various measures so as to reduce the exposure to allergens. Therefore, it is recommended to wash bedsheets, pillows and mattress covers in a temperature of at least 55° C.
Each mattress should have a separate cover which is suitable for numerous washing. The cover should be made of the highest quality, skin-friendly knitwear. What is more, it should be dirt resistant, but should allow free air circulation.
Single layer, cotton covers should be forgotten about, as they should be replaced by single and multilayer covers, made of polyester knitwear, which is suitable for washing in a temperature of 60° C.
Sound sleep is a condition that must be fulfilled, in order for proper development of the child to take place. During infancy the child spends between 14 to 20 hours a day in its cot. During this time the child sleeps and rests.
The child may be ill, it may cry, sweat, spit up milk or soak the diaper in the cot. Therefore, for epidemiological reasons it is recommended that the mattress should be used by one child only.
A used mattress is for sure, not the best idea. Even if the cover has been washed and it is stain free, it does not mean that the insert of the mattress is clean. Used mattress may be deformed or broken. Each child should have its very own, new mattress!.
Rubber sheets or foil protectors limit free air circulation. They can block or limit the amounts of excess heat from being removed during sleep.
According to midwives, who have many years’ experience in taking care of infants, the use of those kind of mattress protectors may even lead to overheating of the child during sleep.
Blocking or limiting free air circulation is very often the cause of infant skin lesions and rashes. Therefore, it is not recommended to sleep or rest on a mattress covered with this kind of protector for a long period of time.
The most frequent causes of sleep disorders are caused by temperatures which are too high, lack of ventilation and limitations in heat transfer.
It is recommended to use protectors which allow free air circulation. The best solution is the two stage protection of the mattress – a multilayer cover and protector, which can easily be taken off and washed. It provides 100% effective mattress protection against stains resulting from natural physiological processes (sweating, milk spitting up, leakage from the bottle or soaking of the diaper).
In the period of teaching the child to sleep without a diaper and in the case of older children who suffer from incontinence, disposable changing pads should be used.
Our solution is – the Fiki Miki hygienic pad – which was awarded by the Committee for Protection of Children’s Rights in the ‘Child Safety’ category in the ‘World Friendly for Kids’ contest, in 2013.

We use only the best materials provided by respected Polish and European suppliers. All materials have Oëko-Tex Standard 100 and National Institute of Hygiene certificates.
Latex An extremely solid and comfortable material obtained from the combination of natural and synthetic latex. The mixture of these two materials is subjected to foaming and vulcanization processes. The inserts obtained in this way possess: excellent point resiliency, comfortable body support during sleep, excellent air circulation and humidity regulation, high resistance to wear and damages, lack of possibility of mattress deformation. The high resilience allows the mattress to adjust to the shape of the body.
In the Fiki Miki mattresses we use high quality perforated latex foams (20% of natural latex, 80% of synthetic latex) with a hardness of 70-85kg, which have Oëko-Tex Standard 100 and National Institute of Hygiene certificates. All perforated latex foams and latex inserts used in the Fiki Miki mattresses have the antifungal and hygienic properties, confirmed by the ASTM certificate.
Polyurethane foam has been used as an insert for mattresses for many years now. The density of the foam is selected based on the weight and predicted use of the mattress. The bigger the density, the harder and more solid the mattress. The use of polyurethane foam with appropriate parameters allows the mattress to be of very good resiliency, with stable edges and which is relatively light. It is an excellent cover for children’s mattresses, which allows us to obtain a relatively low price for the final product and maintain the cosiness and proper product stability.
In the Fiki Miki mattresses we only use polyurethane foams (with a density of 18-35 kg/m3) with the Oëko-Tex Standard 100 certificate (lack of harmful substances). All polyurethane foams used in our mattresses are subjected to restrictive strength tests..
High resilience foam is a type of a foam with improved resilience and resistance to deformations in contrast to standard foams.
Coconut mat is obtained from natural coconut fibre combined with a mixture of latex. The coconut mat has been the most common mattress filling for many years. In the Fiki Miki mattresses we use coconut mats, which are additionally hardened during the needling process. The inserts obtained in this way, are: flat, hard, but at the same time, provide resilient support of the body during sleep. What is more, they ensure excellent air circulation and humidity regulation, high resistance to wear and damages.
Coconut mats, due to their nature, are green and easily biodegradable.
Natural buckwheat hull– in the Fiki Miki mattresses there is no risk of discoloration taking place after washing the cover of mattresses with buckwheat hull. Fiki Miki mattresses have an independent insert with buckwheat hull (registered in the patent office, utility model No. 63616) and covers, which can easily be removed and then be put on again.
The tannin which is in the buckwheat has anti-dust mite and bacteriostatic properties but it does not penetrate the human’s skin. It fights dust mites and bacteria, which may be in the mattress or on the surface of a human’s skin. Natural buckwheat hull acts on the external part of the skin as well as on the subcutaneous tissue, making it feel like a gentle micro-massage, which stimulates nerve endings, causes the extension of capillaries and accelerates the blood and lymph circulation. What is more, it leads to local congestion (body warming), the reduction of swelling and increases the amount of pain one can take.
This massage also has a psychotherapeutic effect, it has an impact on the reduction of fear and lowers the level of a depressive mood. It also reduces stress and fatigue levels, and what is most important – it gives you a feeling of relaxation*.
The cellulose-lignin compounds of which buckwheat hull is made of, have unique sorptive properties exceeding 20% of its mass. Thanks to this, buckwheat hull allows a relatively low humidity of the mattress cover to be kept.
The insert made of buckwheat removes moisture very quickly, because the hull absorbs it. Unlike many synthetic inserts, mattresses with natural buckwheat hull do not heat up. They stay cool and dry.
Each delivery of natural buckwheat hull is examined for humidity and lack of dust. Each independent insert with natural buckwheat hull is subjected to a heat treatment before being packed (the insert is put into a special stove with a temperature over 60-63°C and a humidity ranging from 16-30%, for 5 hours minimum).
Only after obtaining 100% of disinfestations and strict drying, the product is marked with the date of manufacturing.
Then it is hermetically packed. The mattress manufacturing process in our company is subjected to very strict procedures and constant quality control. The humidity of rooms is monitored automatically. We also have external monitoring of insect and rodents occurrence during each stage of the manufacturing process. We also monitor raw materials and the storage of ready- made products. There is no risk of discoloration of the cover during washing in the Fiki Miki mattresses with the natural buckwheat husk. Fiki Miki mattresses have the independent insert with the husk (registered in the patent office, utility model No. 63616) and covers, which can be easily removed and get on again.
Pocket bedsprings are single springs made of high-quality wire and they are placed in separate pockets made of textile. Each spring works independently, thus the combination of springs with different hardness allows the mattress to adjust to the natural shape of the spine.
Bonnel spring – the insert of the mattress made on the basis of these springs may be characterized with very high stability, so it is very often chosen by the parents of young children, who like to jump on the bed. The bonnel spring is made of high-quality wire. It provides excellent air circulation and amortization of body weight.
